American retail giant, Walmart, have concluded plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa by the end of 2025.
Walmart International President and CEO Kath McLay said the new stores will feature fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel and technology.
“By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, Walmart will bring its signature every day low prices and global standards to the market, while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” McLay added.
Walmart already owns the South African-based retailer Massmart, which operates the brands Makro, Game, Jumbo, Builders and Shield – about 300 stores in eight African countries.
Walmart operates a variety of international markets, largely throughout Latin America, including more than 900 retailers in five Central American countries, 400 locations in Chile and more than 3,000 throughout Mexico, according to Walmart.
The retailer also has about 400 retailers in Canada, about 330 Walmart and Sam’s Club stores throughout China and about 25 in India.
Formerly known as Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the company was founded in 1962 by brothers Sam Walton and James “Bud” Walton in Rogers, Arkansas.
Walmart is the world’s largest company by revenue, according to the Fortune Global 500 list in October 2022. It’s also the largest private employer in the world, with over 2.1 million employees.
