South Africa’s National Health Department has condemned protests by Operation Dudula and other civic groups calling on authorities to deny foreigners access to healthcare facilities.
This follows demonstrations where protesters blocked access to services based on nationality and documentation status.
Three Operation Dudula members were released on free bail on Monday after storming the Lillian Ngoyi Clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto, questioning patients about their nationality and demanding identity documents.
The department’s spokesperson Foster Mohale says the disruption of healthcare service will not be tolerated.
“We have since reached out to the leadership of Operation Dudula for a sit down meeting in order to find long lasting solutions to this challenges. Of course, this is a societal issue is not mainly about health but we believe that with sober minds we can be able to find long lasting solutions,’ says Mohale.
