Premier of South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, Thami Ntuli will on Wednesday launch Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s resting place as a provincial heritage site.
The KwaPhindangene Royal Residence in Ulundi will host the ceremony, in partnership with the Buthelezi family.
The event marks the start of a three-year project to preserve Buthelezi’s legacy as a traditional leader and statesman.
Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi, founder and president of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), died on 9 September, 2023. He played a major role in the political history of South Africa, and is considered one of the greatest heroes of the struggle against oppression in the country.
Shenge, as he was known to his followers, was also the chief of the Buthelezi tribe in the Nongoma area of KwaZulu-Natal .
In recognition of his contribution to the formation of a free South Africa, a university of technology (Mangosuthu University of Technology) and a highway in the Mlazi township were both named after him.
