South Africa’s Orlando Pirates have crashed out of the CAF Champions League after suffering a 5-4 penalty shootout heartbreak against Saint Eloi-Lupopo of DR Congo at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Against all odds, the Bucaneers overturned a 3-0 first leg deficit to tie the game at 3-3 in regulation time, but failed to complete the job in a nerve-wrenching shootout.
Pirates shot into the lead on 39 minutes through Masindi Nemtajela, but just before the break, the Soweto giants and their visitors were both reduced to 10-men after Tshepang Moremi and Chris Sumbu received red cards for fouls committed off the ball.
Pirates led 1-0 at half time, but Yamela Mbuthuma doubled their advantage in the 68th minute before Oswin Appollis struck the all important equalizing goal in stoppage time.
