Sunday’s much-anticipated Cape Town marathon has been cancelled due to bad weather.
The marathon was shelved for concerns after gale force winds blew over temporary structures along the route which could’ve jeopardized the safety of runners and spectators.
With a record entry of 24,000 runners, some of whom had already arrived at the starting point when it was called off at 5 am, it was a huge setback for the organisers.
This year’s event was supposed to be phase two of their bid to secure Abbott World Marathon Major status. There are currently seven major city marathons, including New York, London, Tokyo and Sydney.
Meanwhile, the Mayor of Cape Town, Mr. Geordin Hill-Lewis, expressed disappointment over the cancellation. stressing that the race had to be called off due to high winds at the race start and along the route.
Hill-Lewis says he’s gutted for the runners but grateful to the event organisers and authorities for taking a decision with runners safety in mind.
