The National Assembly on Tuesday amended the Electoral Act, introducing changes to Clause 60 to strengthen the process of election result transmission and collation.

Under the amended provision, the presiding officer at each polling unit is now required to electronically transmit election results to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal (IREV) immediately after voting and counting.

However, the lawmakers also provided a fallback option in cases where electronic transmission is not possible due to a poor network.

The amendment stipulates that if the electronic upload fails due to communication or network challenges, the manual result sheet, known as Form EC8A, shall serve as the primary source for result collation.

Meanwhile, Nigerians have occupied the National Assembly since Monday demanding that the Senate approve electronic transmission of results from the polling unit to restore public trust in elections.

The Senate initially retained the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 which provides that election results should be transferred and not transmitted, which raised uproar in the country.(www.amatropics.com)
