Yet another mass shooting in Gugulethu, a township in South Africa’s Western Cape, claimed seven lives on Saturday morning, local police confirmed.
Police said they were alerted to the shooting in the early hours of Saturday morning, and upon arrival at the Kanana informal settlement, officers discovered the bodies of the victims, all with gunshot wounds.
It’s understood that the victims may have been socialising in a kitchen when they were attacked. Three other men who were also in the house at the time managed to escape unharmed.
Police spokesperson Andrè Traut said, “Lieutenant General Patekile met with detectives from the Serious and Violent Crimes Unit on the scene this [Saturday] morning, where he instructed them to explore every possible lead to uncover the truth behind the killings and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. Violent and firearm-related crimes remain a top priority for the Western Cape SAPS, and no resource will be spared in the pursuit of justice.”
