South African police have arrested five individuals in connection with facebook online scams.
The suspects have also been linked to other cases of armed robbery and attempted murder. The suspects were arrested in Midrand, Johannesburg, on Monday.
They are alleged to have been running an online scam in which they lured victims under the pretense of selling vehicles, using Facebook Marketplace.
Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner Major-General Fred Kekana says, “They are arrested for attempted murder on the police. Secondly, all five of them [are arrested] for conspiracy to commit crime. Because they wanted to rob the buyer who was with the police and they didn’t know the police are on their trail.”
“They are now linked to a previous incident where they shot at a victim and a case is under investigation and armed robbery where they robbed a victim of money,” Kekana explains.
