Return of Tinapa Marks Economic Rebirth, says Gov Otu

The burial ceremony of slain Alexandra township taxi boss Molefe Moekeletsi (Pictured), was held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, near Johannesburg on Saturday.

Family, colleagues and community members gathered to bid farewell to a man they described as dedicated, respected and deeply rooted in the taxi industry.

Moekeletsi, 52, Chairperson of the Alexandra Randburg Midrand Sandton Taxi Association (ARMSTA), was shot and killed last week in Marlboro, Johannesburg, while on his way to work. One of his bodyguards also died in the ambush, while four others, including two bystanders, were wounded.

The shooting sent shock waves across Johannesburg’s taxi community and comes just weeks after another high-profile taxi killing in Soweto. No arrests have been made.

Family spokesperson Ruben Mahlagare said the funeral is a painful reminder of the dangers faced by figures in the taxi sector.

He said the attack was not the first attempt on Moekeletsi’s life.

“Some time back, there was an attempt on his life, so he had security, but you know these types of things do happen. We always knew that the type of work he was doing brought risks, but we didn’t expect that he would be attacked in this way. From what we gather, it was deliberate, it was planned, there’s no doubt about it.”
