The 34th session of the Council of the League of Arab States, held Saturday in Baghdad as part of the Arab Summit, officially endorsed Morocco’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028–2029 term.
In its final communiqué, known as the Baghdad Declaration, the Council called on all member states to actively support Morocco’s bid by engaging with friendly countries and mobilizing diplomatic efforts to secure the kingdom’s election to the prestigious UN body.
Morocco was represented at the summit by its Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
The summit, hosted by Iraq for the first time since 2012, brought together leaders and representatives from the 22 Arab League member states, along with international guests including UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
Its primary focus was on the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza, with leaders calling for an immediate ceasefire, the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, and the reconstruction of the war-torn territory.
