Legendary former Rangers International FC and Green Eagles of Nigeria Captain, the late Christian Chukwuemeka Chukwu, will be laid to rest on Friday, August 22, 2025 in his hometown Enugu, the family confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.
Chukwu passed away in Enugu on April 12, 2025.
The family said plans are already underway to give the former Super Eagles Head Coach a befitting national burial.
The family added that plans are underway for an event to take place in Lagos, where he played most of his national team football, to enable his fans and friends that may not be able to travel to Enugu for the funeral, to celebrate the legendary Nigerian football hero.

Chukwu, a Nigerian ‘Hall of Fame recipient, Sports Ambassador, Member of the Federal Republic (MFR), Airpeace Ambassador, and only ‘Field Marshall’ in the history of Nigerian football, played his club football for Enugu Rangers where he won major honours including the (now rested) Africa Cup Winners’ Cup in 1977 amongst several domestic trophies.
He was voted Player of the Tournament when Nigeria won Its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. Prior to that, he also captained the team to back to back bronze medal showings at Ethiopia ’76 and Ghana ’78. He earned a total of 54 international caps for Nigeria, scoring five goals.
He was an assistant coach to Clemens Westerhof when Nigeria won the AFCON for the second time in Tunisia in 1994; and qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in the same year.
