Another money spinning Professional Golfers Association (PGA) is on the cards for golf lovers across the world as the six-year-old Rocket Classic tournament comes up in Michigan on the PGA Tour from 29th June till 2nd July, 2025 at the Detroit Golf Club
The tournament debuted in 2019, replacing the Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour schedule, and is the first PGA Tour event to be held completely within the Detroit city limits.
Every single edition of this event has been hosted at the Detroit Golf Club. Opened in 1916, this Donald Ross-design is a traditional parkland style venue with tree-lined fairways. It is technically a composite of the North and South Courses (though only the 3rd hole is featured from the South Course).
This course was selected to host the 1941 Ryder Cup, but that was cancelled due to WW2 (crazy how history can alter a course’s trajectory).
This is regularly ranked as one of the easiest par-72’s on tour. In 2023, the course averaged 69.92, with three players reaching 24-under-par.
This is an exceptionally flat layout that invites the bombers to open their shoulders and let rip. But putting will probably prove to be the most crucial stat this week (as it often is on flat, low-scoring birdie-fests).
All six of the previous winners have been inside the top three going into the final round (it isn’t easy to make up ground with everyone scoring so freely).
World No.5 Collin Morikawa, the highest-ranked player in the field (he and Bradley are the only top ten players in attendance). Morikawa lost in a three-man playoff here back in 2023, but he hasn’t won on tour since October 2023.
Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley will look to keep the positive juju going this week (he may be looking to cement his Ryder Cup participation by creeping into the automatic qualification spots).
Much like Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay will also be looking to end his winless drought this week. Cantlay hasn’t tasted victory since the 2022 BMW Championship but has been steadily climbing this year’s FedExCup standings.
Ben Griffin and Cameron Young have been extremely consistent of late, while Hideki Matsuyama is still looking to recapture his brilliant early-season form.
2023 champ Rickie Fowler currently sits just inside the top 70 in the FedExCup rankings and could do with a solid week as we approach the final stretch of the season.
