A 54-year-old police officer was shot dead and three suspects arrested in connection with an attempted robbery in Belfast township, in South Africa’s Mpumalanga province.
It is alleged that the police detective and the suspects tried to rob people who had stopped on the roadside.
The robbery was quickly halted by police who were patrolling the area. There was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the police as they tried to flee.
The police detective, reportedly stationed in Pienaar, was found dead in the back seat of the suspects’ vehicle.
Provincial police spokesperson Donald Mdhluli says two firearms and ammunition were recovered at the scene.
The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear at Belfast Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing charges including attempted car hijacking, armed robbery, attempted murder, and illegal possession of firearms with ammunition.
