South Africa’s sporting fraternity is mourning the loss of legendary SuperSport commentator, presenter, and anchor, Phumlani Msibi, who passed away last Friday, 20th June, 2023 at the age of 57 after a short illness.
SuperSport CEO Rendani Ramovha confirmed that Msibi’s death was due to a short illness and acknowledged his “sterling reputation and professionalism”. Msibi was described as “one of the most beloved sports commentators SuperSport has ever had”.
Msibi’s career at SuperSport began as a ring announcer in the late 90s, alongside boxing promoter Mzi Mnguni, before transitioning into a seasoned boxing commentator. He was known for his passionate and knowledgeable commentary, particularly in football and boxing, and was considered a true pioneer in African-language commentary.
Numerous tributes have poured in from various organizations and individuals, including the EFF, PSL, and SuperSport United, highlighting his contributions to sports commentary.
