South Africa’s Patriotic Alliance (PA) party has criticised the country’s new Home Affairs Minister and Democratic Alliance (DA) deployee, Leon Schreiber’s decision to extend temporary visa concessions to foreign nationals awaiting the outcome of visa applications, waivers and appeal applications.

The PA’s Deputy President Kenny Kunene says the party campaigned vigorously to run the Home Affairs portfolio in the Government of National Unity (GNU) because it knew that no other party could be trusted to do so properly.

He described the decision by Schreiber (Pictured), as “tantamount to legalising illegal immigrants.”

“The mandate of Home Affairs is not extensions. The mandate of Home Affairs is to process your application and give you time frames and once your time frames get closer you must go back to your home and apply again. So as a party we do not agree with this legalisation of illegal immigrants.”

Political Analyst, Dr. Levy Ndou says one of the advantages of the Government of National Unity-GNU is that ministers are going to work hard to avoid the scrutiny from their own constituency and other political parties in the National Assembly, and to secure their future in government.

Ndou advised Ministers to work towards improving service delivery for ordinary South Africans.

“What is also a very good advantage of Government of National Unity, is that all ministers that are there, are going to work very very hard, because they know their political parties are watching them, other political parties are also watching them. They also want to preserve their future in government. so, this is good if people want to ensure that they work hard, because they know they are being monitored.”
