Residents of the eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa remain concerned that persistent rainfall will further damage their properties.
Light rain has continued to fall in KwaZulu-Natal. Coastal areas such as Durban north and Umhlanga in the north of the city have been severely affected.
Tenants of a complex in Umhlanga, say they are concerned about a widening hole in the driveway that could jeopardise the stability of the entire property.
Body corporate trustee, Marie-Anne Kerdachi says, “That huge amount of water just kept dragging the soil with it all the way down because it’s very steep down to Marine Drive. So it just carried on until there was no more soil, we thought. But it’s just been non-ending. Every time there’s a bit of rain there’s more soil going down, including the rubble and everything broken away – and we’re worried now that the actual building on this side is compromised.”
The KwaZulu-Natal government on Tuesday said it is in talks with national government to declare the province a disaster area following damaging storms since December.
According to the department, the cost of damage by the recent flooding incidents estimated at billions of rands. More than 50 people have since lost their lives and hundreds of people have been left homeless. The hardest hit areas include Ladysmith, Dundee and Durban.
