Nigeria suffered another injury setback on Monday as Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface pulled out of the squad after sustaining a groin strain in training.
The 23-year-old was sidelined for his country’s final warm-up friendly against Guinea on Monday and it has now been confirmed that he will be out for up to six weeks.
“Good luck guys. Wish you all the best at afcon @ng_supereagles,” Boniface wrote on his Instagram account.
Boniface is currently the German Bundesliga’s top scorer, netting 10 goals in 16 league games so far this season. He made his international debut in October 2023, and has since earned four additional caps.
His injury comes on the heels of the recent withdrawal of midfielder Wilfred Ndidi who was injured in Leicester City’s 2-0 win at Cardiff City on December 29.
Meanwhile, OGC Nice of France forward, Terem Moffi has been called-up to Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad after Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface (23) was forcto replace Boniface in the squad.
Moffi, who has scored four goals in 14 appearances for the Super Eagles, has struggled for form with Nice this season, and as a result, missed out on Nigeria’s AFCON squad.
Nigeria open their Cup of Nations campaign with a Group A game against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday before meeting hosts Cote d’Ivoire and then Guinea Bissau.
