Nigeria’s representative at Miss Universe 2024, Chidimma Adetshina, captured global attention with her incredible performance, earning the title of first runner-up.

While Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer claimed the crown, Adetshina’s grace, intelligence, and cultural pride left a lasting impression on fans and judges alike.

The event, held in a spectacular ceremony, highlighted not only beauty but also the depth of character and intellect of its contestants.

Adetshina stood out at every stage of the competition, from her striking national costume to her eloquent responses during the final round of questioning.

Milestone for Nigeria on the global stage

Adetshina’s success marks one of Nigeria’s most notable achievements in Miss Universe history. Her journey reflects the essence of empowerment and pride in African heritage.

Throughout the competition, she skillfully wove narratives of resilience and hope, proudly showcasing her Nigerian roots to the world.

Fans across Nigeria and beyond have taken to social media to celebrate Adetshina’s achievement, calling her a beacon of inspiration. Her performance in the final rounds, including her heartfelt response to a question about cultural representation, has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

Building on Nigeria’s legacy

Adetshina joins a legacy of Nigerian women who have made history on global beauty platforms. Her performance brings to mind Agbani Darego’s groundbreaking win as Miss World 2001 in Sun City South Africa, a moment that redefined beauty standards and inspired a generation of young African women.

While the crown ultimately went to Victoria Kjaer, Adetshina’s impact on Miss Universe 2024 is undeniable. She has cemented her place as a role model, inspiring women to embrace their heritage and strive for excellence.

Chidimma Adetshina’s remarkable journey at Miss Universe 2024 exemplifies the power of resilience, talent, and authenticity. Though she did not take home the crown, she has won the hearts of millions and elevated Nigeria’s status on the global stage.

After a turbulent year in which she attempted to win the Miss SA crown, Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina landed in the top 30 of the Miss Universe pageant to eventually place second to Denmark’s Victoria Kjær Theilvig who won the crown.

As the highest placing African contestant, Adetshina took the African title and Oceania.

“I’m ecstatic, wow,” she said on social media.

In the final question for the top five which included Thailand, Mexico and Venezuela, the ladies were asked what message of inspiration they had for women aspiring to be contestants. Adetshina said she wanted to be a symbol of hope and a beacon of faith.

“As someone who has persevered with grace I believe I have fought for not only myself but for Africa,” she said.

This comes with the history-making run that saw Adetshina become the first Nigerian title-holder to place in the top five with Agbani Darego in 2001 in the top 10 who would go on to win Miss World that same year.

Following her runner up victory at the Miss Universe Pageant, Adetshina praised her new adopted country for supporting her through these difficult times.

Ms Adetshina expressed delight in her first runner-up feat in a post-event interview video clip posted on the X page (formerly twitter) of the Miss Universe Nigeria organisation.

She said: “I’m so excited. I don’t have words to describe what I’m feeling right now, but I’m so proud of myself, and I just made history!”

This was followed by another post by the Miss Universe Nigeria organisation, eulogising her: “Beauty with Brains and Humility….Our Queen#Chidinma.”

She was also crowned Miss Universe Africa and Oceania.

As the highest-ranked African Contestant in this year’s competition, this marks the continent’s highest placement in Miss Universe history.

“To my dearest Nigerians, with open arms, you carried me on wheels made of the purest love and intentions. I still cannot fully comprehend the reasons, but what matters most is that you’ve given me a second chance at life. For a moment, my life flashed before my eyes, but in the next breath, Nigeria refuelled my purpose and my reason to live,” Adetshina said on her Instagram page.

“As I step onto the Miss Universe stage tonight, I carry with me over 2 million beads of love, strength, and an unstoppable spirit. In this very moment, history is being made through my story. I call upon all my ancestors to guide my path with ease and grace. I promise to give my very best while you continue to pray for me.”

Ms Adetshina made history earlier this year by winning Miss Universe Nigeria after withdrawing from the Miss South Africa pageant that was marred with controversies.

She was born in Soweto to a Nigerian father of Igbo descent and a Mozambican mother who is accused of allegedly committing identity fraud in South Africa.

The Law student and model, who was raised in Cape Town, was a finalist in the 2024 Miss South Africa pageant but faced severe online harassment and bullying over her Nigerian roots.

Social media attacks targeted her Nigerian heritage despite her being born in South Africa and meeting all competition requirements.

Ms Adetshina eventually announced her withdrawal from the competition citing safety and the well-being of herself and that of her family members.(www.amatropics.com)
