State prosecutors have officially closed their case in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, exactly three years since the trial began.
The trial commenced in 2022 and centres on the 2014 killing of the former Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and captain.
The State wrapped up its case at the Pretoria High Court on Thursday, two years since the trial started from scratch before a new judge.
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng had taken over from retired Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela, who fell ill in 2023.
Five men accused of the footballer’s murder will now have to make their case.
Meyiwa was at his former girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s mother’s home in Vosloorus, on the East Rand of Johannesburg at the time of his killing. Khumalo has been named as the alleged mastermind behind Meyiwa’s murder.
State prosecutor George Baloyi says while their case has been concluded, the defence is at liberty to call any of the witnesses who were not called in, to testify.
“On that point, my lord, that concludes the leading of the evidence for the state, and we close the state case. It’s precisely three years since the state started leading evidence, and the state now formally closes, closes its case.
‘The law is very clear that any witness not called by the state is at the disposal of the defence. We make all witnesses who haven’t been called to testify. We make them available to the disposal of the defence,” HE SAID.
The matter returns to court in two weeks time.
