Johannesburg Metrobus commuters are expected to march to the bus operators’ offices in Braamfontein on Tuesday to hand over a memorandum of grievances, demanding a return to the old payment system.

Commuters are protesting the change in the payment system introduced by Metrobus.

The situation is tense at Gandhi Square in the Johannesburg CBD as they raised a list of grievances, among them the new payment system which they say makes travelling expensive. They also say the bus service operation is poor as they arrive late for work and that the newly introduced fleet doesn’t accommodate people living with disabilities.

One of the protesters mentioned that they are disgruntled because the current system charges them multiple times for using different bus routes.

Metrobus is the City of Johannesburg’s bus service, a wholly owned municipal entity that provides public transportation to residents.
