Angry Soweto residents have blocked off the Chris Hani Road on Thursday following the killing of an e-hailing driver at Maponya Mall. on Wednesday
They also blocked the entrance to the mall, saying they cannot operate after last night’s ordeal. Taxi operators tried to reopen the busy road, but the situation turned volatile.
One of the residents says it cannot be business as usual.
“I was here the whole night. I didn’t sleep. Can you imagine a human being taken out of the car and his body stuck on the steel of the chair? The chair burned to ashes. Then it’s okay, and this mall must operate as normal. Everything is fine, back to business. Who are we? We are animals and we can die everyday.”
There is a heavy police presence at Maponya Mall in Soweto, where one person was killed and two others wounded in what is believed to be a taxi violence incident last night.
Two e-hailing vehicles were attacked by unknown suspects at the mall.
A number of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) vehicles are stationed inside the mall premises wile a Group of South African National Services (SAPS) members and National Traffic Police members are stationed outside.
Preliminary reports suggest that the incident is allegedly linked to tensions between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.
