The Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are currently in Abuja, Nigeria, to deliberate on critical regional issues following the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic from the regional body.
The meeting is expected to address the implications of the withdrawal and explore broader implementations.
ECOWAS Commission President, Dr. Alieu Touray highlighted that the ministers would also discuss the mass protests in Senegal triggered by the postponement of the country’s presidential elections.
The unrest in Senegal has raised concerns within the regional body, and the meeting aims to find constructive solutions to address the challenges member states face.
On January 27, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic officially announced their immediate withdrawal from ECOWAS, accusing the organization of becoming a threat to its members.
The decision to withdraw raised questions about the regional stability and cooperation that ECOWAS seeks to promote among its member states.
The meeting of the Foreign Affairs Ministers is seen as a crucial step in addressing the concerns and fostering unity and collaboration within the ECOWAS region.
