The African zonal qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensified this week with shocking results across the continent.
Republic of Benin moved up to second place in Group C, temporarily upstaging Nigeria and South Africa (who play in Uyo today) after edging group leaders Rwanda 1-0 in Abidjan (see pic).
The Result saw Benin tied on points with Rwanda who still occupy top spot on goal difference.
In Algiers, Guinea put their World Cup ambitions back on track with a stunning 2-1 away win against Algeria at the Nelson Mandela Stadium. Mortaye Sylla’s 50th minute goal alongside Aguibou Camara’s 63rd minute strike was enough for the Guineas to overpower the former African champions in their own backyard, and move to second place in Group G level on points with group leaders Algeria..
Similarly in Bamako, Ghana edged hosts Mali 2-1 as Jordan Ayew struck in stoppage time to hand maximum points to the Black Stars in Group I. The result pushed Ghana up to second place behind Comoros on six points each.
Elsewhere, a late equaliser by the dangerous Fiston Mayele salvaged a point for visiting DR Congo against former African champions Senegal. Ismaila Sarr had given Senegal what looked to be the winner but the Leopards fought back to salvage a point to retain their third spot in Group B.
